South goa villas

  /  South goa villas

South Goa’s villages define Goa’s famed ‘Susegad’ way of life. Each turn of their circuitous road leads to a stunning old Portuguese villa overlooking a charming front yard or verdant fields at the back. You hear the soothing hum of the crashing waves before you step onto its pristine beaches.

Villas in South Goa offer the perfect milieu for a meditative week in India’s favourite tropical holiday destination. We have curated for you in South Goa, a collection of exclusive villas, each with their own private pools, that you can call home for as long as you want.

South Goa’s famous pristine white beaches are usually a short walk away. At Agonda and Galgibag for example, the olive ridley turtles come to nest, calling for a more cautious development. If you asked us, we’d nudge you towards Cansaulim, which boasts of one of the longest stretches of beach in India. It seduces the visitor with its wide, relative empty beaches fringed by coconut trees and its swimmer-friendly waters. You could alternately choose to rent a villa at Cavelossim and make the most of both a beach and the Sal River. Another overlooked gem of a beach is the Talpona beach sustaining the charming Goan fishing village on the banks of an eponymous river, deep in the south.

Protective of its culture and peace, South Goa has guarded its way of life more fiercely than the North. A blessing, that the more discerning Goan loyalists have been thankful for, when renting a villa here.  We invite you to let the ‘susegad’ of the South replenish your soul. Rent a villa in South Goa and sign up for feni tasting or book a table at restaurants managed by some India’s hottest chefs. Of course, the advantage of renting a villa means you can get yourself a personal chef to cook your meals to your specifications.

If you have signed up to enjoy a holiday in the South, in true Goan spirit, you must indulge in Goa’s favourite summer drink distilled from cashews, the Feni. The world’s first Feni cellar, more of a museum carefully curated and offering feni tasting sessions, is a great idea to pleasure your senses on a holiday. Stay in South Goa, dive into the local bars, and share old stories of fishermen and local football legends with the locals over urak.

Discover the treasures of South Goa with our luxury private pool villas

The South Goa offers easy access to the Western Ghats. A UNESCO-recognised biodiversity hotspot, the ghats unveil their wonder as they spill over into Goa sharing their rich wildlife treasures and gorgeous waterfalls. Pick the best of our villas in South Goa and turn it into your base camp for a range of wildlife activities — treks to waterfalls, spice trails and river cruises.  Goa’s green canopy assumes a rich lusciousness, throbbing with life post-monsoons. Whether the dignified beauty of the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuaries or the splendour of the Dudhsagar waterfalls, South Goa’s inland marvels must not be missed. One of Goa’s lesser known but most fascinating sites is the Usgalimal in Sanguem, where carved into hard laterite surfaces on the banks of the Kushavati River you will find prehistoric petroglyphs. Discovered only as recently as 1993, these rock engravings are said to date back to the Upper Paleolithic or Mesolithic era or 20,000 to 30,000 years ago, making it some of the older rock art in the world.

If you are into architecture or heritage, the south is where you’d want to rent a villa. Many a stately mansion in South Goa public and private, has been well-preserved to showcase Goa’s Indo-Portuguese heritage and architecture here. When you rent a villa in South Goa, you can also sign up for these guided heritage walks that take you through the streets of Margaon or Madgaon, the former commercial capital of the state. Look in awe at the Sat Burnzam Ghor, or house of seven (originally) gables the first private house to be allowed a chapel inside or check out the Madgaon’s grand Municipal Building.

For a more indulgent plunge, drive down to Chandor which makes a fair claim as one of Goa’s most impressive villages.  Amongst its grand old homes is the 17th-century Braganza House, which has opened its doors to visitors. One wing of the house is inhabited by the Pereira-Braganza family that has for hundreds of years now housed a relic of St. Francis Xavier in their family chapel. The Great Salon or ballroom of Italian marble floors, mother of peral – adorned furniture and European chandelier makes an impressive statement on the wealth and prestige certain Goan families had managed to earn for themselves.

When in the South you are also closer to Goa’s most important Hindu temples including the 450-year-old Mangeshi temple in Priol or the equally old, Shantadurga Temple in Kavalem village, Ponda which uniquely integrates Portuguese arched windows with typical Hindu temple architecture elements. Also located in these parts is the 12th century Mahadev Temple at Sanguem, the only example today of the Kadamba-Yadava architectural style.
